DAY FOUR: What Is Crazy?

In Jesus’s day, some people were dreaming about a holy war against Rome and Rome’s puppets in Jerusalem. Even little boys were sharpening their knives and talking of war. But to others, this talk of war was foolish. They had seen too many die already in failed revolutions. “There must be another way,” they said hopefully. “Another kind of uprising. An uprising of peace.”

Jesus, a few dared to hope, might lead that kind of uprising.

To others, his message was the crazy dream of poets and artists, the fantasy of children at play or old men who drink too much. But others asked themselves, “What other message could possibly change the world?” Perhaps what was truly crazy was what they were doing instead—thinking that a little more hate might conquer hate, a little more war might cure war, a little more pride might overcome pride, a little more revenge might end revenge, a little more gold would cure greed, or a little more division could create cohesion.
